Sun. Nov. 22, 2026 – YIZKOR
The Jewish Survivors of Latvia will host its annual Yizkor service and luncheon in New York City on Sun. Nov. 22nd from 11am – 2pm.

Annual membership dues of $36 per person are required to attend this event, with children under 18 welcome to join for free. This helps to offset the luncheon fees (venue rental, food and beverage, etc). Children under 18 are welcome to attend for free.
We also greatly appreciate additional donations to cover the year-round work we do as an all-volunteer staff. Those expenses include website maintenance, hosting free screenings for the community, mailings, translating and publishing books by Latvian Holocaust survivors, etc).

This Yizkor service will feature:
- Keynote Speaker: Karen Frostig
- Karen is a visual artist, public memory artist, writer, and cultural historian. She holds a position as a Professor at Lesley University and is a Scholar at the Women Studies Research Center and the Brandeis-Hadassah Institute at Brandeis University. Her work as an activist and artist focuses on creating spaces of remembrance.learn more about her important work creating public memorials, including Latvia’s “Locker of Memory” here)
- Fireside Chat: Alan Shindelman
- Alan left a career in finance to pick up a camera and now travels the world capturing Jewish stories, from rabbis in synagogues across the globe to the communities they serve. His mission is rooted in family: at 91, his grandmother Asia Shindelman, a Holocaust survivor, testified against a former Nazi guard of the camp where she was imprisoned. Together, we’ll explore what it means to inherit a story like Asia’s, and how we make sure the next generation hears it
- Guest Rabbi: Benjamin Birkeland (Stanton Street Shul, NYC)
If you are interested in making a short presentation about a relative or family member who either passed away or survived the Holocaust, please reach out to us. We can help you create a PowerPoint presentation and work with you on a speech. This can also be an ideal bar or bat mitzvah project or teenage activity. We are looking to make the Yizkor service more interactive so that it crosses over to future generations.

BEFORE RUMBULA (Work-in-progress screening)

It is our honor to invite you to a work-in-progress screening of BEFORE RUMBULA, the first part of Mitch Lieber’s long-anticipated documentary film series. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Mitch Lieber and Prof. George Schwab (Vice President of the Jewish Survivors of Latvia).
